What is Ziliqa?

Zilliqa is a public, permissionless blockchain known for its high throughput, capable of handling thousands of transactions per second. It leverages sharding as a second-layer scaling solution, addressing blockchain scalability and speed issues. This platform supports decentralized applications and introduced staking and yield farming in October 2020.

Development and Founding

The development of Zilliqa began in June 2017, with its testnet launching in March 2018 and the mainnet in June 2019. Prateek Saxena, an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore, conceived the idea. Saxena, with Anquan Capital co-founders Max Kantelia and Juzar Motiwalla, established Zilliqa Research to develop the network. The team included CEO Dong Xinshu, CTO Yaoqi Jia, and Chief Scientific Officer Amrit Kumar, all former research fellows at NUS.

Zilliqa’s Unique Features

Fundamental Analysis of the Ziliqa Cryptocurrency reveals it as the first public blockchain entirely based on a sharded network. This architecture allows high transaction throughput and scalability. With each shard independently processing transactions, the network’s capacity grows with the number of shards. Zilliqa aims to rival centralized payment systems like VISA and MasterCard, targeting large-scale enterprise use in various industries. Both Anquan Capital and Zilliqa Research hold substantial ZIL reserves, the native utility token used for transactions and smart contracts on the network.

Network Security and Smart Contracts

Zilliqa’s security is ensured through a practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (pBFT) consensus protocol, requiring a two-thirds node agreement for record validation. Its security is further reinforced by elliptic-curve cryptography and a proof-of-work algorithm for node identity and shard generation. Zilliqa introduced Scilla, a safety-focused smart contract language, enhancing security and facilitating the verification of smart contracts.
